💰 Zuck’s Billion-Dollar Bet: Can Meta’s AI Dream Team Catch Up?

When Mark Zuckerberg wants something, he doesn’t wait in line; he buys the whole store.

Mark Zuckerberg

That’s exactly what’s playing out in AI. Meta is spending billions to become an AGI heavyweight, and Zuck’s not shy about how he’s doing it, by snapping up top talent in one of the most aggressive hiring sprees tech has ever seen. We reported about this in an earlier edition when he was starting to get his team in place and now we have a complete picture.

Here’s what’s going down:

  • Meta just launched Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) with a bang.

  • At the center is Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, now Chief AI Officer at Meta—thanks to Meta’s $14.3B deal for 49% of Scale.

  • Joining him: Nat Friedman (ex-GitHub CEO) and Daniel Gross (Safe Superintelligence), both respected AI thinkers.

  • Meta also poached at least seven researchers from OpenAI’s important “Zurich” team like Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai.

  • Talent from Google DeepMind and Anthropic have also joined, making this a serious brain gain.

But it’s not just about who: they’re getting paid what?!

  • Meta is offering up to $100 million signing bonuses.

  • Some total comp packages hit $300 million over four years, with much of it vesting in Year 1.

So what?

Meta plans to spend $64–$72 billion on AI infrastructure in 2025. That’s a moonshot budget. But not everyone’s clapping.

Critics say this is a “desperation play” and warn that writing massive checks doesn’t automatically lead to breakthroughs. And it’s not just competitors watching, regulators are starting to sniff around the talent wars for potential market distortion.

Zuckerberg is stacking his bench with top players. But building AGI isn’t like launching another app.

The real question, in my view?

Even with all the talent money can buy—can Meta truly catch up?

🎓AI Just Topped India’s Hardest Exam. And No One Noticed!

While everyone was chasing AI headlines, ByteDance quietly dropped a bombshell: AI now outranks every human in the IIT JEE, India’s toughest Engineering college entrance test.

That’s right—Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro scored 336 out of 360, taking Rank 1.

Gemini cracks the IIT JEE!

To put that in perspective:

  • The best human score? Rajit Gupta with 332/360, still amazing, but not enough to beat the bot.

  • The JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) is no joke. It’s the gatekeeper to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), some of the most elite engineering schools in the world. Yours truly knows the pain of studying for the IIT and NOT getting through!

  • Students train for years, often starting in middle school. And now, an AI model topped them all.

What’s wild? This wasn’t even front-page news.

So what?

ByteDance (The Chinese company that owns the TikTok app), published the results quietly, maybe not wanting to trigger a global “AI beats humanity” panic. I don’t even know why a Chinese company was using IIT JEE as the benchmark to test AI?

And it leaves us with one big question: If AI is already outperforming the best students… what comes next?

AI for Good: AI helps Finds Healthy Sperm, Helps Couple Get Pregnant After 19 Years

A new AI tool called STAR helped doctors at Columbia University find healthy sperm in a man once thought infertile. After nearly 20 years of failed treatments, the couple finally had a baby.

🧬 Old methods used painful surgery and only worked 30% of the time. STAR is less invasive and early reports say it works better — and patients prefer it.

🌍 With fertility rates falling and IVF being super expensive, this could make having kids easier and cheaper for many families.

Is Moore’s Law Over for AI? Google’s Gemini Flash Thinks So

For the last 2 years, AI got cheaper and smarter every year, just like computer chips used to with Moore’s Law. But now, Google has raised prices for its popular Gemini 2.5 Flash model.

Input tokens now cost 2x more, and output tokens cost over 4x more. They also launched a cheaper, weaker version called Flash Lite.

💡 What’s going on? Behind every AI model are real costs:

• Hardware (GPUs or TPUs)
• Model size
• Software to run it
• How you use it (Longer replies cost more!)

AI doesn’t scale like normal products. Longer chats cost much more to run.
But most companies charge you the same per token, no matter the size. That’s like paying the same price for gas, even if each extra gallon cost more for the pump!

What This Means:
• AI may not keep getting cheaper. Unless there’s a new architecture or a way to compress the transmission of tokens
• Users may be pushed to smaller, cheaper models for simple tasks.

The AI pricing game just changed.
