Rabbit R1: The AI-Powered Robot Assistant

Rabbit R1

Imagine holding a device that's not just smart but intuitively intelligent. This is the Rabbit R1, a groundbreaking AI gadget from Rabbit, an AI startup. Priced at $199, the R1 is a glimpse into the future of personal technology. The Rabbit R1 is one of the hottest AI-powered gadgets from this year’s CES.

A Gadget Unlike Any Other

The R1 might remind you of a modernized version of a '90s handheld TV. It's compact, about half the size of an iPhone, with a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a rotating camera, and a unique scroll wheel/button for navigation. Inside, it packs a 2.3GHz processor, 4GB of memory, and 128GB of storage.

Rabbit OS: The Heart of R1

The real magic lies in Rabbit OS, the device's operating system. Unlike traditional large language models, Rabbit OS is based on a "Large Action Model" (LAM). Think of it as a universal controller for apps, a single interface to manage your digital life. In theory, it’s an idea similar to Alexa or Google Assistant. Rabbit OS can control your music, order an Uber, buy your groceries, send your messages, and more, all through a single interface. No balancing multiple apps and logins— just ask for what you want and let the Rabbit hop to it.

Availability and Future Prospects

On Jan 22nd, Rabbit announced a partnership with Perplexity AI. The LLM-powered search startup will connect its “conversational AI-powered answer engine” to the R1 for free. The first 100,000 R1 buyers can avail a year of the Perplexity Pro subscription, which costs $200, at no charge.

The R1 is available for preorder and is expected to start shipping in March (it has already pre-sold over 50,000 units). It stands as a potential market leader, outpacing competitors like Humane’s AI Pin (we covered this in an earlier edition of the newsletter). What happens when you cross the Rabbit with Open Banking APIs? Truly self-driving money.

The pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is not just a scientific endeavor but a strategic chess game among tech giants. In this landscape, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, emerges as a key player in the quest for AGI. While Open AI’s Sam Altman is also working on AGI, they are likely to be developing a closed-source version of AGI.

🌐 Into the AGI Arena

Meta, traditionally known for its social media properties (Instagram, Facebook, etc.), is now venturing into the realm of AGI. Zuckerberg's vision goes beyond the creation of advanced AI; he seeks to integrate these breakthroughs into Meta's suite of apps, directly impacting billions of users.  Why do I feel a wee bit scared? Perhaps because of Meta’s past mishaps with data privacy, concerns about election manipulation, reports of teenage suicides, and disinformation campaigns launched on its properties by rogue state actors.

💼 The Talent and Tech Tango

The race for AI supremacy is fundamentally a battle for talent. In a market where AI experts are as prized as rare gems, companies are engaging in intense 'talent wars.' Some of these folks are paid a total remuneration exceeding  $1M! Zuckerberg’s Meta is not only competing for these minds but also amassing a formidable arsenal of computing power essential for training large AI models. Meta aims to own over 340,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs by year's end. This scale of resources is unparalleled in the industry.  Investors are still smarting from his costly foray into the Metaverse (remember 2021?).

🌍Open vs. Closed AI: A Strategic Dilemma

The debate over open versus closed AI development is a reflection of corporate philosophies and strategies. While some companies opt for a closed, guarded approach(like Open AI), Zuckerberg advocates for a more open-source vision. This strategy is not just about democratizing technology; it's a tactical move to shape the AI ecosystem and potentially standardize AI development on Meta’s terms. That is why we should be closely watching how Meta goes about developing AGI.

Samsung Galaxy S24 is, wait for it, powered by AI!

Samsung S24 from the samsung.com

Key AI-powered features:

1. Ultra-Fast Processor: The Ultra features a new processor with the fastest Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for efficient AI processing.

2. Innovative Camera System:
- ProVisual Engine: Utilizes AI for better color reproduction, extreme detail, and easier photo editing.
- Quad-tele System: Offers four levels of optical-quality zoom and up to 100x digital zoom, all AI-enhanced.
- Enhanced Nightography: Improved low-light photography capabilities.
- Generative Edit: Quick and intuitive photo editing tools.

3. AI Integration: The Galaxy AI introduces new ways to interact with and utilize the phone, marking a significant advancement in smartphone technology.

Why does it matter?

With this model, generative AI has been infused into everyday activities like searching, photo editing, posting on social media, and so on. Also, this is one of those high-powered smartphones that have the ability to crunch vector math at the edge (geek-speak for the ability to perform computation on the device instead of sending it to a web server on the Internet).

As an app developer or designer, what AI features can you use to impart superpowers to your app? This applies to fintech /banking apps too. Advantage Android App developers, finally?

Paytm discovers AI can cut costs.

Paytm is an Indian fintech that specializes in digital payments and financial services, based in Noida, India. It was founded in 2010 by Vijay Shekhar Sharma under One97 Communications.

Recent News:

- Paytm's AI Integration: The company is focusing on adding AI and machine capabilities to its platform, moving away from expanding its workforce.

- Workforce Reduction: Due to the increased use of AI-led automation, Paytm has laid off hundreds of employees. Or at least, that is the narrative being touted by the management.

- Operational Efficiency Over Expansion: The shift in strategy emphasizes enhancing efficiency through technology rather than increasing the salesforce.

- Financial Improvement: Paytm's net loss has decreased, and operating revenue has increased, indicating a positive financial turnaround.

- Net Loss Reduction: Paytm's net loss narrowed by 43% to INR 2220 Million in Q3 FY24, compared to INR 3920 million in the same period the previous fiscal year.

- Operating Revenue Increase: There was a 38% surge in operating revenue, reaching INR 28.5 Bn in Q3 FY24, up from INR 20.6 Bn in Q3 FY23.

Why does this matter? AI is being used by Paytm to repair its once-tarnished reputation of being a money pit. We know AI can help reduce operational costs, but we would like to get more details. Is it enough to give PhonePe and Google Pay a run for their money? Only time will tell.
