Perplexity AI: Taking on the Tech Giants

Imagine a web browser that doesn’t just show you information but actually helps you make decisions and complete tasks. That’s the vision of Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI. He’s working to make this a reality.

What’s Happening:

• Perplexity AI is developing a new browser called Comet. This browser aims to integrate AI assistants directly into your browsing experience, making it more interactive and helpful.
Srinivas describes Comet as a “containerized operating system.” It can access other services, read web pages, and perform tasks for you.
• This move puts Perplexity in competition with other AI companies like OpenAI and Google, who are also exploring AI-powered browsers.

Strategic Moves:

• Perplexity has partnered with Motorola to have its AI assistant pre-installed on new Razr phones.
• This partnership was possible due to ongoing legal scrutiny on Google, which has opened opportunities for competitors like Perplexity.
• Perplexity has shown interest in acquiring Google’s Chrome browser if the U.S. government requires Google to sell it. They would love to buy out the US arm of TikTok as well.

Funding News:

• In December 2024, Perplexity closed a $500 million funding round, increasing its valuation to $9 billion.
As of March 2025, the company is in talks to raise between $500 million and $1 billion, aiming for a valuation of $18 billion.

So What?

Perplexity AI is making bold moves- with innovative products and strategic partnerships, it’s positioning itself as a significant player in the evolving AI landscape. Will it beat Google and its amazing search business?
